Salary Transparency at Yempo: What You Need to Know

At Yempo, we take candidate and employee feedback seriously. We monitor global employee forums, read the comments people make about their work experiences, and regularly conduct internal feedback sessions with our team. Then, we take a hard look at our own operations. If something is coming up consistently as a frustration or concern in the market, we ask: are we doing this right? How can we improve?

This process has led us to refine many aspects of how we work – and one of the key themes we’ve noticed lately is salary transparency.

It’s a hot topic, and understandably so. Compensation is one of the most important factors in a person’s career decisions, and how employers handle it speaks volumes about their values. So let’s talk about it.

Why don’t all companies share salary ranges?
A common complaint among jobseekers is the lack of clarity around pay when browsing job ads. It’s frustrating to go through the effort of applying, only to learn the role is vastly under or over your expectations.

At Yempo, we solve this easily: we publish salary ranges. Every job ad we post includes a realistic salary band, so you know whether the role is suitable for your experience and expectations. This saves everyone time and allows for more honest, efficient conversations.

We believe that when jobseekers have access to the right information upfront, they can make empowered choices about their career.

Why do we ask about your current salary?
Another topic that sparks debate is why some employers ask for your current or most recent salary. At Yempo, we do this too. We ask because it helps us quickly assess alignment.

For example, if you apply for a Full Stack Developer role with a range of PHP 160–200k per month, and your current salary is 40k, there may be a mismatch in seniority or skill level. That’s not a judgement – it just means the role might not be right for you yet.

On the other hand, if we’re hiring for a 30k data entry role and your last salary was 90k, we’d consider you overqualified. Why does this matter? Because roles that are significantly below your experience level may not keep you engaged for long – and we want our employees to feel challenged and fulfilled, not stuck or underutilized.

The salary question isn’t about boxing candidates in. It’s about making sure we’re placing people where they can truly thrive.

Why do companies ask for salary confidentiality?
This is one of the most misunderstood areas in recruitment. Employee forums often assume that salary confidentiality is part of a corporate conspiracy to keep wages low and discourage employees from demanding more.

That’s not the reality – at least not at Yempo. In fact, we want our people to be paid fairly. Underpaying employees isn’t just unethical – it’s bad business. If you’re underpaid, you’re more likely to leave or be poached by a competitor. That doesn’t help us, and it doesn’t help you.

So why do we encourage confidentiality?

Because context matters, and not everyone sees the full picture. You and a colleague might hold the same job title, but your backgrounds may be very different – qualifications, years of experience, language skills, niche expertise, exposure to international markets. Sometimes, a skill that doesn’t seem relevant to you is actually very valuable to the business in ways you can’t see yet.

We’ve also seen how sharing salary details can cause unnecessary stress. If someone earns more, it can feel demoralising. If you earn more, you may worry about being “too expensive.” Either way, it can erode morale and distract from the good work you’re doing.

At Yempo, your salary is a private agreement between you and the company. If you ever feel unsure about how your compensation is determined, we encourage you to speak to your HR contact. We’re happy to explain our decisions and ensure you feel confident in your value here.
