My journey with Yempo
by Skippher Lumbab, Business Intelligence Manager
Before joining Yempo, I was working for a company that unfortunately had to shut down due to issues involving our foreign executives. I was part of the Administration team, primarily handling compensation and benefits, while also serving as the acting team lead for the admin department. We officially closed operations around July 2014.
At the time, our Filipino executives encouraged me to hold off on applying elsewhere, as they were working on something they hoped I could be a part of. However, after a couple of months without any clear updates and with my savings depleting, I felt the need to find work again. In my previous role, I was a bit of a jack of all trades, handling various responsibilities across different areas. While that gave me broad exposure, it also left me feeling like my experience lacked a clear focus or specialization. I am however confident in my abilities as an Analyst, so I decided to apply to all available Analyst roles I could find. That’s when I came across Yempo’s job posting for a Data Analyst. I applied, was invited for an interview, and was fortunate to be hired shortly after. That marked the beginning of a much more focused and fulfilling path in my career.
Yempo in its startup days
When I started at Yempo, the company was still very much a startup. I remember there were only four of us in the office on my first day.
Having worked for two other startups before, both of which didn’t make it past two years, I had some initial concerns that Yempo might face the same challenges. I even shared this during one of our team get-togethers. Michelle and Ian, however, reassured us that they are committed to Yempo’s success, and they’ve truly delivered on that promise. We not only passed the two-year mark but are now celebrating our 10th year! From one office with 4 staff when I started, we’ve grown to two main sites and hundreds of employees all over the Philippines.
What I really appreciate about Yempo is its culture of openness and transparency. They actively welcome ideas, suggestions, and feedback from staff and clients, and more importantly, they take them seriously. When mistakes happen, they acknowledge them, take accountability, and work to ensure they don’t happen again. I also admire their ongoing commitment to making sure both staff and clients receive real value, showing Yempo’s genuine care to its people and the quality of service it provides to their clients.
Growing with the company
When I joined Yempo, I worked as a Data Analyst for their first client. As the team grew and two additional staff members were hired, I was given the opportunity to lead the small Sales Analyst team due to my prior leadership experience. This led to my transition into the role of Technical Team Lead.
After more than a year with the client, they shifted their business model, which unfortunately made my role redundant. Fortunately, Yempo offered me a position within their Admin team which I truly appreciated. It showed that Yempo valued my work and saw potential in what I could bring to the organization.
In the Admin team, I initially supported the HR team with various tasks, including payroll, which eventually became my responsibility. Given my interest and background in working with numbers, I was also asked to assist with their client invoicing. In addition, I also prepared reports, drawing from my strength as an Analyst.
Over time, this evolved into me leading Yempo’s Business Intelligence team. I’m genuinely proud of how my role has grown, from starting as a Data Analyst to now working as the Business Intelligence Manager. While I know there’s still much to learn, I’m grateful to be part of a company like Yempo that actively supports both personal and professional growth, and they’ve consistently encouraged development and invest in their people.
The future for Yempo
From my perspective, Yempo is one of the strongest contenders in the offshoring industry. This is evident in its commitment to delivering high-quality staffing solutions to clients while also offering top-tier benefits to its staff.
Yempo has come a long way since its early days, and I hope it continues to grow while preserving the culture that makes it such a great place to work. Personally, I see many opportunities for continued growth within Yempo, both professionally and personally. The company’s support for development and its culture of openness creates an ideal environment for learning and taking on new challenges.
In my role, one of the most significant shifts I’ve observed in the offshoring landscape is the growing demand for data-driven decision-making. Yempo has embraced this shift by investing in its analytics capabilities to provide not just operational support but also valuable, actionable insights, internally and to its clients.
Because of this adaptability and commitment to innovation, I believe Yempo will continue to thrive. The company has proven its resilience over the years, especially during the pandemic. When COVID-19 brought everything to a standstill in the Philippines, Yempo quickly adapted by offering remote work options. That flexibility not only sustained operations but also opened new opportunities in the offshoring market.
